The Amazon area

The Amazon region has a total area of more than 6,000,000 km²! (more than 110 (!) times the Netherlands); it covers Bolivia, Brazil (the greater part), Colombia, Ecuador, French Guyana, Peru, Surinam and Venezuela. In terms of flora and fauna this is one of the richest areas in the world. Did you know that as many as one fifth of all the flowing water on earth can be found in the Amazon catchment area; the Amazon is 6,868 km long and in some places dozens of kilometres wide?! This is a region full of De fascinating life with bewildering riches of plants and animals. In some areas you will find more plant species on every hectare of ground than in the whole of Europe! The largest flower in the world (the water lily with a diameter of 2 m), the enormous Caranguejeira spider (larger than a tennis ball), countless endangered animal species (including the jaguar) and a monkey that weighs only 130 gram... these are only a few examples of the riches of nature to be found here. The majority of the people of the region live in towns, but there are still a few native tribes who live in the jungle, among them some groups (it is estimated no more than approx. 180,000 people) who hardly ever or in some cases never have had any contact with the outside world. They are completely dependent on the rainforest; the forest provides them with food, shelter, medicine and tools. The lives of the Native Americans in the rainforest have many mysteries!

A colourful and lively atmosphere
The resort is immediately opposite Manaus, the colourful and lively commercial centre of the Amazon region. This town, on the other side of the Rio Negro, which is about 10 km wide at this point, is a lively market town; it was founded during the heyday of the rubber plantations. The Teatro Amazonas, a resplendent theatre in the Italian renaissance style dates from this time. There are some other monumental buildings in the old centre, among which the famous the Palacio Rio Negro that now serves as the governor’s residence. It is so nice to walk through the old town centre to the colourful fish and spice market that is held every day. There is always a lot to do at the floating harbour. Manaus also has a wonderful array of shops, among others a modern mega shopping mall. The nightlife in Manaus is lively and centred mainly around the Ponta Negra, a boulevard along the river. In addition to pleasant beach activities there are many pleasant street cafes restaurants and dance clubs that are open until the small hours. Our Resort is opposite the Ponta Negra, on the other side of the river. That means that you will have the best of both worlds: an unforgettable stay in the midst of impressive natural beauty with many opportunities to visit the lively town of Manaus!
