We
are very proud to inform you that as part of government policy
to introduce sustainable tourism in the Amazon area our TIWA Amazonas
Resort will serve as an example for all future developments. The
resort was set up in close consultation and with the personal
attention of Governor Eduardo Braga and his staff. The construction
of our resort has very little impact on the environment and as
soon as this starts to have an impact the original natural situation
will be restored. Streams of resources, raw materials and people
will be kept to a minimum, both during the construction phase
and in the exploitation phase. In practice this means that energy,
water and people are sourced locally or recruited on the basis
of the philosophy that prevention (of pollution, impact on the
environment etc.) is better than cure. Where possible we will
give our property the status of Reservado Particular, which will
mean that we will be in an even better position to protect the
environment. A programme is being developed which will enable
students from Brazil and the Netherlands to draw up the necessary
inventories to use the knowledge gained for educational purposes.
Some of our employees are now part of a team whose task it is
to convince everyone of the importance of this philosophy, which
at the moment is largely unknown in Brazil. In order to motivate
the local population even more we have undertaken to pay our local
employees considerably more than the legal minimum set by the
state and with which the major part of the population of the state
of Amazonas has to manage. Finally, the TIWA Amazonas Resort will
donate an annual amount to a fund that initiates and monitors
sustainable projects.
